I’ve spent over a decade guiding backcountry trips above and below the rim in the Grand Canyon, including private tours, deep wilderness routes, and everything in between. I’m also deeply familiar with the permit systems—whether you’re trying to score a spot at Havasupai or plan a longer trek in Grand Canyon National Park.
Northern Arizona and Southern Utah are my home turf. I’ve guided extensively in Sedona, Paria, Zion, Canyonlands, and even less-visited public lands across the Southwest. From short hikes to multi-day backpacking expeditions, I’ve helped travelers of all ages and skill levels find the right trail.
My work spans from the driest desert basins to remote, high-desert wilderness. If you want to get far from the crowds—and feel safe and confident doing it—I can help you choose a route that fits your goals and abilities.
Though I ultimately chose to stay in the U.S., I scouted Peru as a potential destination for guided travel. I know the logistics and layout of adventure travel in the region, and can help you think through how to add hiking or cultural elements to a trip there.
Hey, I’m Codell. I grew up in the Southwest and, after serving in the military, knew I needed a life built around the outdoors. I started guiding Grand Canyon trips over a decade ago—and never left. Today, I’m the Senior Operations Coordinator for the largest commercial hiking program in the U.S., but I still light up every time I get to talk trip planning, logistics, and routes with someone who’s excited about the desert.
I’ve guided over 100 backcountry expeditions in the Grand Canyon and surrounding parks and have helped travelers from all backgrounds—including solo hikers, families with kids, first-timers, and extreme athletes—find their way in this landscape. If you’re curious about the canyon, desert gear, permits, or just want to figure out what’s realistic for your group, I’m happy to help.
