Why SLO Feels Like Home

San Luis Obispo—SLO to locals—is a coastal town nestled between the ocean and nine ancient volcanic peaks of rolling hills and wine country. It’s laid-back, sunny, and full of surprises.

“I moved here for college in 1984 and fell in love with the town and area. It just feels like ‘home’ to me.”

And a quick tip from your local host:

“It’s pronounced San LOO-is Obispo, or just SLO. Never San Louise. That’s like nails on a chalkboard.”

Things to Do in Town

  • Downtown SLO & Mission Plaza

“Exploring the shops, galleries, and restaurants downtown on Higuera and Monterey Streets with a walk along the creek path and through Mission Plaza. (Do not forget to stop in Bubblegum Alley).”

The heart of town is full of hidden gems and classic charm. Walk the shaded creek path, grab a scoop of ice cream or a cup of coffee, and don’t skip the infamous Bubblegum Alley—it’s exactly what it sounds like.

  • Cal Poly SLO Campus

“Make sure to see the Architectural Graveyard or hike up to the ‘P’ for views of campus and Bishop’s Peak and out to the ocean.”

A mellow hike or campus stroll gives you a feel for the area’s energy, especially when wildflowers line the hillside in spring.

Hikes, Bluffs & Bike Rides

  • Montaña de Oro Bluff Trail

“A gorgeous hike along the bluffs of the Pacific Ocean with beautiful ocean views, full of wildflowers in the spring.”

This coastal trail near Los Osos is beloved for its cliffside views and crashing surf. Go early or late for golden light.

  • Bishop’s Peak or Madonna Mountain / Cerro San Luis

“Beautiful hikes on two of the Nine Sisters (extinct volcanoes that line the Central Coast). Gorgeous views of San Luis Obispo and the surrounding areas, classic California foothills hikes.”

Bishop’s Peak is the tallest in town and a rite of passage for locals. Madonna is a shorter, gentler loop great for sunset.

  • Shell Beach Bluff Walks – Dinosaur Caves to Cave Landing

“A walk along the bluffs at Dinosaur Caves Park, Eldwayen, South Palisades, or Cave Landing Parks.”

Peaceful blufftop paths, ocean breezes, and benches for soaking up the Central Coast views.
  • Elfin Forest Boardwalk

“Elfin Forest Boardwalk Morro Bay and Los Osos (Bayside Cafe in Morro Bay).”

A short, scenic boardwalk through estuary wetlands and dwarf oaks—great for birdwatching and mellow nature strolls.
  • Cycling Routes (no direct links, but route described by Kim)

“North Highway 1 to Morro Bay and back to San Luis Obispo through Los Osos and Los Osos Valley Road. OR south to Avila Beach, Shell Beach, and Pismo Beach and back to San Luis Obispo via Price Canyon Road.”

Long scenic stretches with ocean views and plenty of places to stop for snacks, swims, or wine.

Kim’s Ideal Day in San Luis Obispo

“My perfect day would start with coffee and breakfast at Linnaea’s Cafe with a seat in the back garden. I love having a quiet morning writing in my journal and savoring the sunshine, flowers, watching the fish and birds, and enjoying the SLO vibe.”

“After breakfast I’d walk around town—exploring the shops and galleries, stopping in Hands Gallery, Bubblegum Alley, Secrets of the Garden, walking through Mission Plaza and along the creek.”

“If I went south, I’d walk the bluffs in Shell Beach, then go to Pismo or Avila for a swim and beach time. Then dinner at Firestone or Rib Line for BBQ, or El Guero or La Esquina for Mexican—and end the night at Bull’s Tavern, my favorite college bar!”

“If I went north, I’d walk the bluffs at Montaña de Oro, then head to the Elfin Forest. I love the coastal drive between them. Then dinner at Bayside Cafe or Hofbrau House in Morro Bay and a beach walk to watch the sunset. And of course—back to Bull’s for a drink at the end of the night!”
